MUSIC

I generally listen to music from the 80's and some new singers like Marroon Five and Five for Fighting.
It's hard to catch a concert of my favorite singers and bands from the 80's, eventhough John Bon Jovi is still Rockin' around and We recently went to a Journey concert and a Def Leppard one too.

My favorites were Simple Minds, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, The Cure, INXS, Spychedelic Furs, Pet Shop Boys ,more New Wave style of the 80's.
Now, those concerts are hard to fins nowadays (eventhough I heard the Pet Shop Boys were recently in Minneapolis).

I guess I like this music, because it reminds me of my High School years and all the fun and parties that we had at the time. All the dressing up in a the 'punk' style. I must admit that I was a fan of Maddonna and Cindy Lauper, yet Maddonna's early years (not the later ones- I wouldn't go to a concert of hers now even if it were for free).

But my ALL TIME FAVORITE is:
TAKE MY BREATH AWAY- by Berlin

Lyrics:

Watching every motion
In my foolish lover's game
On this endless ocean
Finally lovers know no shame
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say
My love

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

Watching I keep waiting
Still anticipating love
Never hesitating
To become the fated ones
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say
My love

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

Through the hourglass I saw you
In time you slipped away
When the mirror crashed I called you
And turned to hear you say
If only for today
I am unafraid

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

Watching every motion
In this foolish lovers game
Haunted by the notion
Somewhere there's a love in flames
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say
My love

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

For me this is the most romantic song EVER!!! It is a song of giving and openingup to your loved one. Plus it is sexy as well. It does help that it was used in teh movie TOP GUN, a big deal in the 80's. I guess it brings memories of that first love. I can identify with the lyrics, they are daring and romantic. I just love it!

Changing Moods...totally different from the above....

Another favorite song:
Don't You (Forget About Me)-Simple Minds
Hey, hey, hey ,hey
Ohhh...
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognise me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ohhhh.....
Don't you try to pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security
Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby
Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on - call my name
Will you all my name?
I say :
La la la...

I guess I liked it so much because the lyrics are about the typical teenage love relationships and all that troubles that girls and boys go through when they break up and want to be together and all that...ha,ha,ha.
But undoubtedly, the melody was great! AWESOME!! I still hear it on the radio and still feel young and like dancing!
Plus...it was from one of my FAVORITE 80's movie The Breakfast Club.

Another Favorite Song:
IF YOU LEAVE Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD)

If you leave, don't leave now
Please don't take my heart away
Promise me just one more night
Then we'll go our separate ways

We've always had time on our sides
Now it's fading fast
Every second every moment
We've got to--we've gotta make it last

I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends, someday

If you leave I won't cry
I won't waste one single day
But if you leave don't look back
I'll be running the other way

Seven years went under the bridge
Like time standing still
Heaven knows what happens now
You've got to--you've gotta say you will

I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd meet again

I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends

I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd meet again someday

If you leave
Oh if you leave
Oh if you leave
Don't look back
Don't look back

I Guess I like this song so much becuase it was from my favorite movie EVER! (from the 80's- Pretty in Pink)
Plus, it is the typical teen-age dilema, and typical love song theme. It reminds me of those years and of my very first boyfriend (not really) hee,hee...but it brings nice memories of the 80's. IT HAS PROM WRITTEN ALL OVER IT!!!!

But my ALL Time FAVORITE is:

Movie Adaptations

I teach Julia Alvarez's "In the Time of the Butterflies" in my Literature Class.
I usually have the students watch the movie with Zalma Hayek and Marc Anthony.
While the movie is great, being an adaptation it leaves things out, and changes some others.

I have my students:

1- Research the life and dictatorship of Leonidas Trujillo and the Mirabal Sisters
2- Read the novel
3- Watch the movie
4- Answer a series of comprehension questions related to the novel
5- Create a chart naming the differeces between the movie and the novel
6- Differenciate the real events from the made-up ones in the movie related to Trujillo's Dictatorship and the Mirabal Sisters. I try to make the students aware, though, that they must keep in mind who's tellingthe story and might it be different if told from someone else's point. Would the emphasis on things be different?

Eventhough the students watch the movie in class, the Exam is largely based on the novel. I use the movie to benefot those who are more visual, yet in a literature class, teh written work comes first. YET, teh students learn that they cannot always trust movies instead of readingteh novels.

My Media Texts

In my house we watch ABC, Disney Channel, Lifetime Television and some ESPN.
from what I've learned, I believe they are owned by the
Walt Disney Coorporaton.

Right now we listen to KQQL 108 on the radio because of it's Christmas music. That too is owned by Disney.

No wonder all what my 7yr old daughter talks about is about characters and things related from Disney:Hannah Montana, Zack and Cody, Ally and AJ (We even went to the Aly & AJ concert in Puerto Rico before coming to Minnesota). And we visited the Magic Kingdom(for a 5th time) earlier in the summer.

From what gave gathered from this experience, my daughter, as well as us, has been secretly brainwashed into buying Disney Merchandise and family based entertainment.
What surprised me is that eventhough this process began since we were in Puerto Rico, I chose a radio station here in Minnesota that belongs to the same owners and I didn;t know it. Has the brainwash been so engrained in us that subconsciously we choose their products!

We still love the parks; and Aly & Aj as well as Hannah Montana ROCk Big time.

Loved it!

http://veryfunnyads.com/ads/25044.html

Cool Video ...

I'm from the 80's generation. I just loved this video from How I Met Your Mother, one of the greatest fake music videos in sitcom history (not much competition there, but still...)

Documentary

As an educator at the UPR, one of the classes I teach is a basic freshman course. The students in this couse read some essays on identity and the new life that they will encounter in college. It has been my intention to create a documentary which we can use in class in later years when discussing this topic. My idea is to interview several 1st year students on the first weeks of class and to interview them again at the end of the 1st semester and at the end of their secnd semester as well. Then , if it were possible, interview these same students on their last semester before they graduate. The purpose of these interviews would be to have the students reflect upon their identities, how they perceive and project themselves to others and to have the new students who will see the documentary years later know that they are not alone and were not the first to feel how they do.

Questions on identity might be asking them:
How they see themselves?
How do they think others see them?
Into what category would they place themselves if they could.
(Ex. Popular, geeks, nerds, all these categories of teen-age culture)
Whatis the importance of being in one or other of these categories, if any?

I would also give them free time to express themselves freely.

Activities I would include aside fron the indicidual interviews would be gruop interviews, recordings of groups around campus, "normal" campus life and activities.

I don't think I'll have difficulty capturing the "truth" and reality in the activities recorded. Teen-agers are true to themselve spretty much on or off camera. But, the group intervies might cause a bit of doubt, since we all know how some students can me influenced , intimidated or cohibited by others. But the whole point of the group interview is just that, to observe teen-age life and reactions at it's true context. The individual interviews have more of a possibility of being more honest and true, if the student is really being hin/herself.
